Fiberlink Protects Critical Assets and Shields Employees from the Risk of Data Breaches with Security On Demand Services

Adds Managed Backup and Recovery Offering to Portfolio of Security Services with New Partnership with Iron Mountain

April 11, 2007

BLUE BELL, Pa., April 11, 2007 – Fiberlink Communications Corporation, the trusted expert for simple, secure mobile working, today announced its newest managed security service with the addition of backup and recovery to the portfolio of Fiberlink Security Services.

Fiberlink’s security on demand services allow IT departments to roll out new endpoint security applications quickly and cost-effectively, while maintaining control over their mobile computing environment. The enterprise IT staff selects the security applications and decides on configurations and policies. Fiberlink’s platform then configures, installs, monitors and updates the application software and signature files on mobile laptops and remote PCs without requiring any software or hardware at the customer premise. Fiberlink hosts the applications' management consoles, reporting modules, and remediation servers in its operations center and integrates them into its mobility platform for seamless delivery and operation. The IT staff has access to compliance reports and a growing array of controls for management and compliance purposes through Fiberlink’s convenient web-based customer portal (see today’s announcement: Fiberlink Simplifies Mobile Working with New Extend360 Mobility Platform 2.0™).

With the addition of data backup and recovery, Fiberlink now offers more than a dozen managed security services. These include services to monitor and manage popular personal firewalls, VPN clients and anti-virus packages already licensed by the enterprise, and subscription-based services to deploy and manage advanced endpoint security applications such as zero-day threat protection, intrusion prevention, vulnerability management, device control, information protection, and data encryption.  Fiberlink partners with IT to provide effective security solutions for mobile workers so IT can devote more time to strategic projects.  These services are managed based on pre-established IT policies and optimized to provide the best experience for mobile workers.

Fiberlink’s managed backup and recovery offering will be deployed and managed by the newly released Fiberlink Extend360 Mobility Platform 2.0™. Fiberlink has partnered with Iron Mountain, the global leader in information protection and storage services, to offer this new security solution as a monthly subscription service to Fiberlink enterprise customers.  Both basic (pre-configured rule sets and agent settings) and custom (fully customized agent and rule sets) backup and recovery options are available from Fiberlink, and pricing is based on the end-user’s backup capacity.  In addition, the service can be configured to require high-speed connections, reducing any potential loss of productivity due to backing up data over a slow connection.

Backup and recovery services are essential for today's enterprises because the amount of digital information created and stored on mobile and remote computers is staggering.  According to market research firm IDC, as much as 60% of corporate data resides unprotected on PC desktops and laptops.  Companies must balance the need for security with easy access to user-generated content like customer proposals, presentations, photos, videos, e-mails, Web pages, instant messages, phone calls and other digital content being exchanged by employees globally regardless of location as more employees have flexible work environments. As a result, businesses face ever-growing data protection and recovery challenges due to security breaches, natural disasters, strict compliance requirements and new regulations requiring added accountability.

“With more than 40 percent of today's workforce considered mobile, enterprises need to take special security measures to protect an un-tethered workforce,” said Sandra Palumbo, program manager for the Enabling Technologies Enterprise group at Yankee Research. “Continuous data protection will help organizations reduce the impact to employees and minimize corporate reputation risk associated with data breaches. Since more and more business-critical information resides on devices that fall outside the protection of the corporate network, it is increasingly important for businesses to manage the risk associated with lost or corrupt data.”

“Fiberlink’s expertise in hosted mobile workforce connectivity and security solutions combined with Iron Mountain’s long history of information protection and storage services provides companies with a complete data protection service,” said Jim Szafranski, vice president of product management and marketing at Fiberlink. “This addition advances our strategy of making a highly relevant suite of endpoint security technologies available to companies as on-demand services.  For instance, our new backup and recovery service is a perfect complement to our data encryption service. The combination allows companies to feel protected and to know that in the case of lost laptops, they can have their users back on their feet in no time.  We are a single-source provider of endpoint security, management and connectivity.”

Fiberlink chose to work with Iron Mountain as a partner for its depth of experience and expertise. For over 55 years, Iron Mountain provides storage solutions to more than 90,000 corporate clients throughout North America, Europe, Latin America and Asia Pacific.
