BLUE BELL, Pa., May 4, 2004 - Honored for creating new business opportunities through information technology, Fiberlink Communications Corp. Cofounders Jim Sheward and Paul Russell have received "Innovator of the Year" awards from Temple University's Fox School of Business. During a decade of business expansion and technology advances, Fiberlink made it possible for enterprises to allow growing numbers of employees to connect securely to their networks while traveling away from the office.
Since its inception over a decade ago, Fiberlink has been continually recognized as a leading technology innovator. In 2001 the Yankee Group recognized Fiberlink for defining an entirely new market, known as remote endpoint security (REPS). Just last year Fiberlink introduced the industry's first policy-based remote access platform, Dynamic Network Architecture (DNA). Also, an esteemed research firm, the Gartner Group, has repeatedly named Fiberlink a leader in the remote access market.
Cofounders Sheward and Russell were among the first to recognize the business potential of virtual private networks (VPNs), steering Fiberlink to become a leader in the field of managed VPNs and remote access security services for large enterprises. Unlike traditional facilities-based carriers, Fiberlink integrates multiple networks and diverse access technologies with best-of-breed security services from partners like Internet Security Systems, RSA Security, Cisco Systems, Check Point, Nortel and Symantec.
"Fiberlink's continual innovation is what keeps the company on the leading edge of the remote access market," said Sheward, Fiberlink's chief executive officer. "Fiberlink provides its partners and customers with mobility tools to make their businesses more competitive. We were the first to combine Wi-Fi and 3G wireless technologies for corporate remote access, the first to build an intelligent access client driven by security policies, and the first remote access provider to integrate vulnerability management services for our corporate customers."
Russell, Fiberlink's chairman, graduated summa cum laude from Temple University. This is the
fourth year Temple University has recognized business leaders with the IT Innovator Award, given to
a person or persons outside the campus community for innovation in applying IT to create business
opportunity.
"The IT Innovator Award honors forward thinking individuals in the technology industry," said
M. Moshe Porat, dean of the business school. "By combining an inspired vision and strong business
leadership, Jim Sheward and Paul Russell exemplify qualities The Fox School cultivates in its
students as the business leaders of tomorrow."
